SMS support

The easiest way to record your expenses is with your phone.

Every user has a special, secret email address where Budgie is waiting to hear about where he or she is spending money. And It’s as easy as tweeting! Phrase your message like this:

(category) (amount) (summary)

So, for example, I just bought a cup of coffee. It cost $1.09. I have a category called “Food,” and its short name is “food.” So after I’ve put my wallet away and received my delicious cup of Joe, I text this to Budgie:

food 1.09 Coffee

The summary is just for you–be as specific or general as you’d like, or skip it entirely if you want to. Just make sure you have an amount and a category.

Find your secret Budgie email address on your account page.

Balance Adjustments

Budgie (intentionally!) doesn’t look directly at your bank account, and sometimes you may need to straighten things up. If your balance has gotten out of sync, you can adjust it via SMS like this:

balance (current balance)

Short Names

You can have as many categories as you’d like to keep your expenses organized. You can call your categories whatever you’d like so that they work the way you want them to.

But beautiful, elaborate category names can be a bummer when you’re trying to SMS your expenses. So every category also has a short name, a single unique word that is not case sensitive. By default, this is just the first word in the name. I have a category called “Work Related,” and that category’s short name is “work.” These are totally customizable, and you can even change them at any time, on the Category page.
